Your Health is Worth 10 Minutes

A conversation with your doctor about breast & lung screenings could be the most important 10 minutes of the year.

Mammograms detect breast cancer. Low-dose CT scans are used to find lung cancer early.

  • Lung cancer causes 21% of cancer deaths in women.
  • Breast cancer causes 14% of cancer deaths in women.

Both are highly treatable when caught early.

Early detection is key.

Pink: Breast Cancer Screening

Why Mammograms Matter

Breast cancer will affect 1 in 8 women during their lifetime.

When caught early, the 5-year survival rate exceeds 90%. Mammography screening has contributed to a 44% decrease in breast cancer deaths since 1989.

Women aged 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year. You may need to be screened earlier depending on your risk factors.

While rare, men can develop breast cancer, too. Ask your doctor about risk factors. If you notice a lump, get it checked out.

Pearl: Lung Cancer Screening

Why Low-Dose CT Matters

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer related deaths among women and men, but less than one out of 10 at-risk individuals get screened for lung cancer.

Early detection through screening can find cancer at its most treatable stage, when survival rates are significantly better. If lung cancer is diagnosed early, it’s associated with a nearly 8x higher five-year survival rate than if diagnosed at a late stage.

What is a lung screening?

A lung cancer screening is a quick, painless and non-invasive, low dose CT scan. It can detect nodules or spots on your lung which might be an early indicator of lung cancer.

It takes just a few minutes to have a scan that can detect cancer at its earliest stage to potentially save your life.

You may benefit from a lung cancer screening if both of the following risk factors are true:

  • You are 50-80 years old and
  • You are a current smoker or previously smoked at least a pack a day for 20 years or two packs a day for 10 years
